Building Towers in Science

Today in science students investigated what solid materials would work well for building towers.   The tower had to be at least 42 cm high and be able to withstand wind blown from a fan.  They had to decide what material properties would work well for the base, middle, and top of their tower.

7th grade reading buddies

Last week we read "Fireboat", an account of a retired fireboat that helped on September 11th. After we responded by writing about a hero.  We worked with our 7th grade reading buddies to finish our hero project.

Weekly Recap Highlights

Here are things that you can discuss with your child about what we went over last week.

Phonics:  Identify vowels and consonant, know that a short vowel sound is coded with a breve, and a long vowel sound is coded with a macron (have your child show you what these look like)

Shurley English:  Punctuation and capitalization rules, and 5 parts of a sentence

Reading:  We read "You are Special" by Max Lucado, the theme of the story is finding your self-worth in Christ not what others think of you, we continued identifying the plot of our stories and made connections while we read, we also choral read a poem by Ken Nesbitt called "My parents sent me to the Store"

Science:  We did hands on group investigations identifying the properties and material of matter,  we dove into the new science Foss curriculum and the kids love it

Math-We reviewed how to tell time to the nearest hour, how to count and write numbers to 100, and learned a math rap to help us with the doubles math facts(have your child recite it to you)

Jesus Time:  we made entries in our camping prayer journals

Help with Memory

We write the memory verse our kids are studying on a chalkboard, close to our dinner table.  

At dinner we discuss the verse.  It always leads to meaningful conversations about God's Word.

Reading silly poems aloud is a fun way to build phonics skills and site word recognition.  Here is a link to an author of poems that we will be studying together as a class, Kenn Nesbitt.  Have your child read these aloud over and over to you to help build their reading skills.
